In order to make collaborative business activities fruitful, it is essential to know characteristics of organizations and persons in more details and to gather information relevant to the activities. In this paper, we describe a notion of “information recycling” that actualizes these requirements by analyzing documents. The key of recycling information is to utilize annotations on documents as clues for generating user profiles and for weighting contents in the context of the activities. We also propose a method of extracting annotations on paper documents just by pressing one button with the help of techniques of camera‐based document image analysis. Experimental results demonstrate that it is fundamentally capable of acquiring annotations on paper documents on the condition that their electronic versions without annotations are available for the processing. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The principal cause of speech recognition errors is a mismatch between trained acoustic/language models and input speech due
to the limited amount of training data in comparison with the vast variation of speech. It is crucial to establish methods
that are robust against voice variation due to individuality, the physical and psychological condition of the speaker, telephone
sets, microphones, network characteristics, additive background noise, speaking styles, and other aspects. This paper overviews
robust architecture and modeling techniques for speech recognition and understanding. The topics include acoustic and language
modeling for spontaneous speech recognition, unsupervised adaptation of acoustic and language models, robust architecture
for spoken dialogue systems, multi-modal speech recognition, and speech summarization. This paper also discusses the most
important research problems to be solved in order to achieve ultimate robust speech recognition and understanding systems.
Dr. Sadaoki Furui is currently a Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Department of Computer Science. He is engaged in a wide range
of research on speech analysis, speech recognition, speaker recognition, speech synthesis, and multimodal human-computer interaction
and has authored or coauthored over 450 published articles. From 1978 to 1979, he served on the staff of the Acoustics Research
Department of Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey, as a visiting researcher working on speaker verification. He is
a Fellow of the IEEE, the Acoustical Society of America and the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers
of Japan (IEICE). He was President of the Acoustical Society of Japan (ASJ) from 2001 to 2003 and the Permanent Council for
International Conferences on Spoken Language Processing (PC-ICSLP) from 2000 to 2004. He is currently President of the International
Speech Communication Association (ISCA). He was a Board of Governor of the IEEE Signal Processing Society from 2001 to 2003.
He has served on the IEEE Technical Committees on Speech and MMSP and on numerous IEEE conference organizing committees. He
has served as Editor-in-Chief of both Journal of Speech Communication and the Transaction of the IEICE. He is an Editorial
Board member of Speech Communication, the Journal of Computer Speech and Language, and the Journal of Digital Signal Processing.

Twenty-five early-onset relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients (12 women and 13 men) with mild disability were compared with 25 matched controls in a dichotic listening (DL) test under nonforced and forced attentional-shift conditions. Patients showed left ear impairment and no left ear advantage in the forced-left condition. Four corpus callosum (CC) regions were measured in patients on a rnidsaggital magnetic resonance imaging scan. The right ear score was negatively correlated whereas the left ear score was positively correlated with CC regions (significant only for the nonforced condition). Moreover, in men, the correlations with DL scores were linked mainly to the splenium and posterior isthmus, and in women, they were stronger for anterior isthmus and posterior body. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is relatively smaller, and the corpus callosum (CC) larger, in adults with Tourette syndrome (TS). The authors explored the possible roles of the PFC and the CC in mediating interhemispheric interference and coordination in TS adults. They measured performance on M. Kinsbourne and J. Cook's (1971) verbal-manual interference task and on the bimanual Purdue Pegboard in 38 adults with TS and 34 healthy adults. Compared with controls, TS subjects were impaired on the bimanual Purdue Pegboard. On the dual task, right-hand performance did not differ between groups, but the normally expected left-hand advantage (opposite hemisphere condition) was absent in TS subjects. In the control group only, better left-hand performance accompanied larger PFC volumes but not CC cross-sectional area.
